Molrenai - Forge City of the Shadowfell
Molrenai is a vast industrial city built into the side of an active—yet unnaturally stable—volcano within the Shadowfell.
It is a place of fire and ash, where molten rivers fuel endless forges, and the rigid caste system ensures that most who are born in the depths will die there.
Overview
- Location: Shadowfell
- Nature: Volcanic forge-city
- Economy: Smithing, metallurgy, infernal craft
- Notable Feature: Lava flows harnessed for industry
The Volcano
Molrenai is constructed along the slopes of a massive volcano.
- The volcano remains perpetually active, but controlled
- Lava flows are diverted into forge channels and industrial arteries
- Waterfalls of magma cascade through the lower tiers
Stygian Stone
The city’s stone is infused with the icy essence of Stygia, creating a supernatural balance:
- Suppresses extreme volcanic heat
- Allows habitation near active lava
- Creates an eerie contrast: cold stone, burning surroundings
The Tiers of Molrenai
Molrenai is rigidly stratified, both physically and socially.
Upper Tiers – The Artisan Lords
- Master smiths, enchanters, and elite artisans
- Lavish (by Shadowfell standards) estates and workshops
- Control contracts, trade, and production
- Guard their knowledge jealously
Middle Tiers – The Working Class
- Journeyman smiths, laborers, and overseers
- Maintain the forges and infrastructure
- Slight upward mobility—rare, but possible
- Often serve as enforcers of the caste system
Lower Tiers – The Ashborn
- Miners and ore-haulers
- Live in soot-choked, ash-covered districts
- Constant exposure to heat, toxins, and shadow corruption
- Short life expectancy
Most who are born here, live here, and die here.
The Shadowdark Mines
Beneath Molrenai lie vast tunnels descending into the Shadowdark.
- Primary source of iron and rare materials
- Dangerous, unstable, and often haunted
- Workers face:
- Cave-ins
- Shadow-creatures
- Toxic fumes
- Supernatural corruption
Society & Culture
- Rigid caste system — upward movement is nearly impossible
- Merit is secondary to birth
- Wealth and power are hoarded by upper tiers
- Religion and superstition often tied to:
- Fire
- Industry
- Infernal or shadow patrons
The Ashborn Reality
Those born in the lower tiers:
- Live short, brutal lives
- Breathe ash and smoke daily
- Exist as expendable labor
- Rarely see the upper city
Hope is not part of their world.
