Why are Wizard Factions important? an excerpt by Stillwell Inkblazer

What are the wizard schools and factions?

While at first glance they may seem like wizard houses in Harry Potter, the history of the wizard cabals actually go deeper. The brick and mortar academies of Zerith are more than places of study and learning. They are places of research. Whether the Damarian enchanters are creating the next great automaton, or the Many Stars faction is figuring out how best to predict the weather for the next year to come, they are dedicated to advancing magic. Much like a fraternity, once joined wizards will usually swear their allegiance for life. Their magically enchanted robes or cloaks acting as a uniform can be worn with pride. Being a member grants instant comradery, as well as the benefits of a sworn pact to help others (and be able to receive help from) their faction. Should they lapse on their memberships dues (paid in gold or service) their robes fade, preventing them from claiming their heritage, or gaining the benefits.

Apprentices at every school learn how to cast spells from all facets of magic, but these factions are businesses, advancing their field, and selling their services.

And with so many competing mages, competition heats up frequently. Sabotage, espionage, and escalating conflicts can quickly lead to bystanders getting hurt. That is where the Landiss come in. Acting as a magical police force, wizards who join the Landiss come from any and all of the other factions. Once joining the Landiss, they often leave their previous faction and dedicate themselves to magic justice, and harm protection for the non magic denizens of Zerith.
